ANNETTE BROOKE MP - A TRIBUTE FROM BROADSTONEOur Member of Parliament is our representative and a very important individual for us all, in maintaining a link between the issues within Mid Dorset & North Poole, our Constituency, and the central government. We can take our problems to our MP and expect that some part of government will investigate and where possible solve them, or at least explain the reasons why. It is therefore with great pride that we congratulate Annette Brooke on becoming our MP. We may not all share her political views but she is an established and well-known resident of Broadstone and has been so for the last 25 years. We wish her the very best in her Parliamentary career. Annette is very well known in Broadstone and many residents have cause to be thankful to her for the pastoral care she has given as a local Councillor. In fact she has been a local Councillor since 1986 and together with our two other Councillors regularly attends this Association's Executive meetings as a guest. Without her help and advice your Executive would often have found it difficult to resolve many of the problems which arise around Broadstone. She has two daughters, Caroline and Eleanor, both of whom were educated at Broadstone schools before going on to University. They graduated some time ago and are both now working; Caroline in Business in London and Eleanor teaching in a Poole school. Annette was educated in Essex and at the London School of Economics where she gained a B.Sc. (Econ) Hons. From there she went to Cambridge University to gain a Certificate in Education. Naturally she subsequently took up teaching and lectured and taught Economics and Social Sciences for 20 years, 10 years of which were as head of Economics at Talbot Heath School. She combined the jobs of Mother, Teacher and Local Councillor for a number of years, only retiring from full time teaching quite recently when her husband (also a teacher) took early retirement. They now have a business in Poole specialising in Rocks and Minerals. Annette helps in this business but is able, without detriment, to combine her Council work successfully. During Annette's time as a Local Councillor she has Chaired Poole's Planning, Environmental Strategy and Education Committees and is currently "Life Long Learning Portfolio Holder" on the Executive of the Borough of Poole. In addition to these committees which she held serially, she has been Sheriff, Mayor and Deputy Mayor. I have no doubt that the training she has received in local council work will be a considerable help to her in the House of Commons. We are sure that Mike, Annette's husband will give her all his support and remember who she is when she appears at weekends and holidays!! The BEST of LUCK ANNETTE. previous | Archive Summer 2001 | next Say you saw it on "Broadstone NET" |
