Residents Association MagazinearrowSummer 2001 - 15

JOAN STURTON

"So you are a Residents' Association Street Warden", said my friend (not from Broadstone) "What do you do?!" So I told her! deliver 2 magazines and 1 newsletter at stated times each year, and with the Winter issue I collect a £1 subscription, from each member on my list, in my particular area. To do this! need: 1) Stamina and a good pair of feet to cope with all those steps and steep drives 3 times a year, 2) to like animals, particularly dogs, 3) to be interested in gardens, 4) to have the patience of Job to visit 2 or 3 times to find someone in when the subscriptions are due.

I became involved with the Association when my parents died and I took over my father's "patch" on the hairpin bend. Then when I moved to Westway in 1986 - "You will still be a Street Warden in you new area won't you?" said the late Colin Kendall - and I'm still at it! It is interesting and enjoyable (even in the rain!) and the people on my list are friendly. We chat about their children and grandchildren, their holidays, their animals and their gardens (are the deer still eating your rosebuds?)

They are interested in the Association and what it is doing, how it deals with problems in Broadstone and the surroundings, and they often air their own views on such subjects!

It seems to me to be a very good thing to have such a "watchdog" to guard peoples' interests in Broadstone, and the 2 magazines and 1 newsletter, together with the Annual General Meeting give the public an overall view of the good work of the Association.

Oh! Splendid, all the subscriptions are in and the money safely banked - now! can put up my tired feet!
