BROADSTONE ALLOTMENT ASSOCIATION

The entrance to the above's allotments nestles discreetly between 135 and 137 Lower Blandford Road. Its southern border is Pocket Park. There are 61 plots of varying size and desirability. (Some are rather close to mature trees, and others contain substantial clay deposits) They cost £0.16 per square meter, per year. The charge includes the supply of water. An average plot would measure 126.5 sq.m., and therefore costk2O.24 To qualify for tenancy of a plot, the applicant must live in the Borough of Poole, not necessarily Broadstone. The Borough has 8 allotment sites. Any resident who is eligible for membership of Poole's Access to Leisure scheme, would be entitled to a 75% discount from the charge quoted above. At present there are 2 plots vacant, which have been offered to residents on a waiting list. On average it takes between 1 year and 18 months from the time an applicant's name is placed on the waiting list until a plot becomes available, This information was most helpfully provided by a spokesperson from the Parks and Open Spaces Department of Poole Borough Council, and can be checked for its current accuracy by telephoning 261315. It was correct in October2001 The Broadstone allotments were started in 1948 and at a later date were joined with the Tatnam Allotment association. On the one hand this provided both associations with greater purchasing power from their seed supplier, and at the same time gave the smaller association (Broadstone) more strength in their negotiations with Poole Council. Their current seed supplier is Dobies from whom they enjoyed 30% discount last season. In addition to the plot rent there is an annual subscription, currently £1 per annum, for membership of the association. Further information is available from Mr John Philipps at 12 Apsley Crescent.
