COUNCIL ELECTIONS

Keeping it in the family - Mike Brooke

Mike Brooke was educated at Cambridge University where he studied Geography, and also met, and later married, Annette. He has two grown-up daughters, Caroline and Eleanor, who both attended Broadstone schools. Mike moved into the area in 1975 as Head of Humanities at Queen Elizabeth's School, Wimborne, where he remained until 1997 when he took early retirement to develop a mineral and gemstone business. Mike has played representative football and played cricket for Broadstone for several years. He now plays a little table tennis, and enjoys music & gardening when time permits. He has travelled widely throughout Europe, and has recently visited India and Namibia prospecting for minerals.

Politics was one of many subjects taught within Mike's Humanities Faculty, and it has been a natural progression from there to standing for Poole Borough Council in the May Elections this year. His long involvement with education (Mike is also a Governor at Merley First School) has given him a place on both the Learning Overview and the Care and Learning Scrutiny Committees. He also has considerable understanding of planning issues and will act as a substitute on the Planning Committee. He looks forward to working with Broadstone residents.

Regime change - David Newell

I am sure you understand that as a new councillor it will take me a little time to get to know the ropes. You can be certain that as a member of the ruling group on the Council, with your help, I will do my best to make the improvements to Broadstone that we all want to see.

Broadstone has been my family home for 35 years. I attended the Primary School and the Grammar School. I have a degree in physics & electronic engineering from Manchester University and a Masters degree in software engineering from Bournemouth University. I am a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers and the British Computer Society. I spent 10 years in the computer industry, before joining the University at Bournemouth where I am a senior lecturer in computing and a course leader of a business computing degree. I have been married to Jane for 16 years and she is the deputy headteacher of a school in Poole.

Family life is still highly valued in our area, and I believe that education is a vital ingredient of our community. As an educationalist, it is natural that I have been asked to sit on Poole Council's Education Overview Committee as vice-chairman, the Care and Housing Committee and the Education and Care Scrutiny Committee. In addition I will be contributing to the Lifelong Learning & Skill and eGovemment Member Steering Groups. I will be representing Poole Council on Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset Learning and Skills Council and Poole Sports Council. More locally, as well as continuing to help our valuable Neighbourhood Watch, I will be sitting on the Youth Club Management Committee as well as the General Council of the Community and Arts Trust. I am looking forward to the opportunity to meet more Broadstone residents. Contact David Newell: 01202 658959.
