Over the 2003 Christmas period the Broadstone Christmas lights did not receive universal acclaim. In fact they were damned in some quarters as looking better in the daylight, than when they were switched on. Indeed we even heard them denigrated in similar language to that used by a certain Mr Ratner when describing his own stock.

So who can we blame? There must be somebody or some organisation that we can blame for bringing the area into disrepute. The responsibility lay with Broadstone Chamber of Trade. Far from laying the blame at their door we should be thanking them in general, and a few individuals in particular, for storing and maintaining the lights for many years, even when they were the first to acknowledge that they were past their sell-by date.

Do you, the Member of the Broadstone Residents’ Association reading this article, know which businesses are represented by the Broadstone Chamber of Trade? The answer is: not all the shops and businesses you see around the Broadway. Membership, for obvious reasons can not be compulsory. What you see is a collection of small businesses struggling to make a living against a backdrop of ever increasing rents, rates and regulations. There is no Mr Bountiful.

However all this is set to change. The chamber is to sponsor a lottery that will enable new lights to be purchased for the Broadway so once again it can be decorated at Christmas with lights that bring pleasure to all who use its facilities.

The Chamber believe that a lottery is a way of enabling all in Broadstone to help in creating the festive season for all to enjoy. So look for the shops in the Broadway selling the tickets, have a flutter and you might just win the first prize of a shopping trip to New York, theatre weekend in London or local panto seats.

Prize draw will be on Saturday 30th October with the prizes being presented on Wednesday 24th November. Watch out for more details.
