BROADSTONE YOUTH AND JUNIOR CHOIRS

Since January 1995, children from the Broadstone area and beyond have had the opportunity to experience singing in a choir, where they can learn vocal skills, make friends, and gain confidence through performance, raising money for charities. During that time two hundred and fifty seven children between the ages of five and fifteen have been actively involved in the Broadstone Youth and Junior Choirs, rehearsing on Fridays after school. For many of them this is a rare opportunity to use their voices creatively as it becomes increasingly more difficult for schools to maintain a tradition of choral singing.

Music from the ‘classical’ repertoire is complemented by that from our, or other nations’, folk traditions, sung in a variety of languages. Our recent concert on 4th July naturally included songs from the Americas! Through song we have learnt about respect for our planet, scientific facts, Biblical stories, our culture in the past, and let our hair down enjoying familiar songs from our favourite films. Famous poetry has been effortlessly absorbed through being sung, and memories honed through performance of songs ‘learnt by heart’.

A cultural desert? I think not!
