TO GLADLY LEARN, AND GLADLY TEACH

John Mann. Published in 2004 by The Memoir Club. Price £17.50

This is the memoir of a local boy who made it to the top of his profession. John Mann was born in Broadstone in 1930. His childhood was spent living in "a substantial redbrick villa, a handsome double-fronted house standing in about a third of an acre". His father was the branch manager of a bank which used the front door and one of the front rooms of this villa. It was situated on what was to become known as The Broadway. John Mann tells of his life in the village centred round the Methodist chapel, the Broadstone School and Poole Grammar School. At the age of 13, John moved with his family to Devon. His early years in Broadstone eventually led to a career in education and local government. John Mann was a leading figure in the world of education in the 20th century. As Secretary of the Schools Council and Director of Education for Harrow, he was at the centre of the development of the education service for many years. Many will find it interesting to read the frank opinions of such a noted insider.
