The Broadstone Club
Broadstone Athletic Club was formed in 1925 by the late Alderman A. B. Haynes, and occupied a site to the rear of his home and chemist's shop in Station Approach. An office block now occupies the site. The Club is not, and has never been, an athletic club in the accepted sense. Indeed billiards, snooker and darts, those classic ingredients of a mis-spent youth, featured prominently at one time.
Over the years the Club has changed to meet the needs of the local community and recently it took the decision to change the name to the Broadstone Club to reflect the wider interests of the membership. Originally it was a boys club, though girls have been welcome now for many years.
Today the Club caters for a wide spectrum of ages from teenagers to grandparents, all taking part in the sporting and social activities. The Club is proud of the fact it provides a sporting and social environment which effectively bridges the "generation gap" which in modern times can so easily be a source of friction and irritation. The Club, which is now based in the Community Centre, currently has about 130 members and its activities are now confined to table tennis, played in the three local leagues. Several social activities are also arranged throughout the year.
The club has its own web-site at http://www.thebroadstoneclub.co.uk/index.html
