January is normally the quietest month of the year for environmental action - both for people and all the natural species. This month seems no exception!

Poole Agenda 21

Poole Agenda 21 launches a Recruitment Campaign for the Millennium Year. They are looking to get an 'interest' level of support from lots of people, who always seem to be too busy to do much. There will be a small annual charge, and in return supporters will receive at least two magazines about all the local issues regarding environment, waste transport etc.

Friends of Broadstone Nature Reserve

Friends of Broadstone Nature Reserve have their Annual Meeting on 18th Jan at 7.30 pm in the Library, and the next active task is 6th Feb.

Poole Countryside Wardens

Poole Countryside Wardens are clearing scrub on Talbot Heath (23rd Jan. 10.00am), and exploring the grounds of Upton Country Park (29th Jan, 2.00pm).

Poole RSPB

The next RSPB meeting is a talk about The Lake District Thurs 13th, 7.30 pm at Upton Community Centre. Poole Harbour bird-boat trips are scheduled for Mon 9th Jan and 6th Feb 11.00 am. Details from Brownsea Island Ferries tel 01929 462383.

Dorset Countryside Volunteers

Dorset Countryside Volunteers will be birch cutting at the Dunyeats Road HCT site on 15th and 16th Jan.

Butterfly Conservation

Most of Butterfly Conservation tasks are in North Dorset, but on Jan 30th there is a task at Higher Hyde (4miles West of Wareham) Details from Bernard Franklin 01305 786201.

Recently published and available from their Customer Services Section, tel. 01258 456080 - is the Local Environment Agency Plan, for the Piddle and Frome river catchment areas, plus Purbeck and Poole. In particular the Agency deals with water management, flooding, pollution and to some extent environmental preservation and improvement. Its a Consultation Draft, and comments are required by the end of February.
