March has continued with the cold wet winter, and there were even a few flakes of snow in Broadstone. Quite an event! Again this month sees a lot of 'Foot and Mouth' restrictions, and almost all events need confirming by 'phone beforehand. The recreation ground and Pocket Park are still open, but most Council areas have been closed, but since Dorset seems to be escaping the virus, we could see more bits of countryside being opened up. The friends of Broadstone Nature Reserve are hoping to visit Canford Heath on 29th April, meeting 10 am at the Gravel Hill lay-by.(details 255076) The local DWT group has work parties on Upton Heath. (Thurs 12th, and Sunday 22nd, Tel 777862). Meet at Upton Country Park, 10.00am. If you are interested in draonflies, the Warden for the Heath is trying to set up a regular monitoring 'walk' to see what species live on the ponds there. Do please check if the trip is off. But despite the weather, Spring is still coming, though I have yet to see my first butterfly. In anticipation all the local nature groups have lots of varied events scheduled. I can only refer you the Greenlink Guide, which lists 80 - yes eighty - events in East Dorset for April, including a 'Dawn Chorus' starting at 4.00 am Indoors, the RSPB group meet regularly once a month for a talk or discussion. This month is an illustrated trip across the Rockies from the Rio Grande to the Grand Canyon (Tel 697325)
