Summer is passing, and the signs of Autumn are all around. The first falling leaves are drifting down, and it will not be long until there are great heaps of them all round my back door. It looks to have been a good year for most kinds of fruit, and everyone I talk to, mentions all the apples that there are this year. We are starting to see the migrant birds returning South, and in particular the groups of swallows are easy to spot. Durlston is generally a good place to see the birds as they gather their strength for the long journey ahead. There is a special walk looking for migrants at Durlston on three Sunday Mornings (9th,16th and 23rd) at 10.00AM There is a DWT guided walk over Upton Heath (2.00 PM on the 9th), starting from the Beacon Hill car park, and the Poole Branch of RSPB has just published its programme for the next nine months (698928 for details) Autumn is also the time for mushrooms and toadstools, and several organisations are advertising Fungal Forays, but none this month in this area. The Friends of Broadstone Nature Reserve will be starting their Winter Tasks on 30th of the month, (Fontmell Road, 10.00AM). Details from 255076.
