Environmental News arrowOctober 2005

Once again last month was fine and very dry. Plants really started to droop, and travelling around a little, I think we were very unlucky to miss several thundery outbreaks that passed within 10 miles. Now it is October and the Autumn showers seem to have arrived, but too late for most plants to have a last summer fling. Still quite a few butterflies and bees around, but hunting fewer and fewer nectar sources. Red Admirals seem to hang on well (even into next month) and are still to be seen when the sun shines. At least I did manage to find one Painted Lady in September, and Whites and Speckled Woods have not quite finished.

Migrant birds have started on their long journey south, and there are small flocks of swallows fattening up before take off. Wheatears are passing through, easy to spot because of their very noticeable white rump.

It's been an unusual summer as far as the wasps are concerned. They just do not seem to have appeared at all, and I could count my sightings on fingers alone.

Task groups are starting up again, so those of you who enjoy a good hack at invading plants, time to sharpen your saws and cutters.
