Environmental News arrowMay 2006

At long last, it is beginning to really look like Springtime. There is a profusion of wayside flowers, swallows and martins are seen skimming the skies, and (a few) butterflies are in orbit. Birds in particular seem to herald the Spring, all species out singing their best in the hope of attracting a passing female. At this time of year, before the trees are in full leaf, it is much easier to spot who is singing. This does not help much with all the very similar warblers that we have, but tits and finches are fairly easy to spot. The next level of recognition is the song, and many of our common species, robin, wren, thrush, blackbird are easy to identify. It does not cost much to buy a birdcall CD, and learn the common calls at least.

Seen ten species of butterfly so far this year, without really trying.

In terms of activities, the only task I can see in the area is a pond dig at Bourne Valley on 7/05 (BoP). They are also doing a guided walk down Branksome Dene Chine on 9/05. Meet upper car park, SZ 069 900..

But lots of walks and talks. Reptiles, Spiders, Badgers, Birds, Flowers and for those early risers amongst us, dawn chorus walks all over the place. The Dorset Coast and Countryside lists 50 such activities for May. If you need further information and cannot get it via the phone number below, try to contact me on 255076.
