Environmental News July 2006

June provided some good summer weather, along with a couple of very wet days, which had a really refreshing effect on flowers and trees. As a result, the wildflowers were out in profusion. Strangely enough, there are not many butterflies around in June, having a break after spring Fever, and Summer Madness. Now it is July and the summer butterflies, Meadow Browns, Skippers, marbled Whites are widespread, together with second broods of the early starters.

Plenty of birds to be seen with youngsters skulking in the undergrowth, watched over by worried parents, who are really thinking about a second brood. Sometimes the larger birds fly round as families, with magpies the clear winners in the noise category. Often it looks as if young buzzards are getting flying lessons, generally chased by smaller birds. They never seem bothered by the chase, just gently wheel away, but the end result is always that they move into someone else’s territory, and it begins again. Have visited Corfe Hills to listen for nightjars, and the seemed to be a good resident population again this year. The friends of Broadstone Nature Reserve are planning a walk on 12th July, 9.00PM at Corfe hills school.

Borough of Poole are in action this month, with Dragonflies at Bourne Valley (today 1st), Ham Common (4th evening) and Canford Heath Nightjars (11th Culliford Crescent).

Otherwise, Dorset Coast and Countryside lists over 40 activities for July, many suitable for children including bats, nightjars, flowers and all types of insects.
