Environmental News September 2006

August continued the fine weather from July, with lots of butterflies and flowers to be seen. However towards the end of the month, it seemed as if most of nature had got fed up with the Summer, and moved on to an early Autumn. Trees in particular showed their disapproval, and started dropping both fruit and leaves in considerable quantities. Certainly in my garden, there is a carpet of small undeveloped acorns. Logically this says there will be fewer mature acorns in the coming month, which in turn says jays and squirrels are in for a hard time.

Not any special sightings on Corfe Hills, but nightjar numbers, Dartford warblers and stonechats seem to be holding their own. Moths and butterflies a-plenty, and recently a good influx of clouded yellows.

Reptiles to be seen, including a count of 6 smooth snakes.

All moves to re-introduce grazing on Corfe Hills have been stalled by English Nature.

Borough of Poole are in action in Sep. Canford Heath (2nd Culliford Crescent, 10.30AM) and Ham Common (Rockley View Point car park, 17.30PM).

Not Much else locally, but several bird and butterfly walks in Dorset Dorset Coast and Countryside lists over 20 activities for September but nothing yet about mushrooms and fungi. I saw an elegant parasol mushroom today, but so far hardly a trace of fungi. Keep praying for rain!
