Environmental News February 2007
This time last year I had just arrived in Tobago, on a visit to see my son. It all seems long ago, but having had such good weather this year, I am very happy to still be in the UK.
Beginning to see signs of Spring, with flowers and catkins leading the way. Hope to get to Kingston Lacey next week for the snowdrops. Birds that overwinter are starting to sing for their mates. Woodpeckers are drumming hard to identify their territories, but not seen/heard any migrants yet. Now is such a good time to see birds, as they are very visible with no leaves on the trees. There are still the odd butterflies around, but one theme I have heard several times this year, is that bees seem to be buzzing early. Do not know why they should be so active, as I have not seen many nectar producing flowers for them.
I was out with the Friends of Broadstone Nature Reserve this morning, cutting out brambles as usual, but for a leisurely friendly Sunday morning activity it cannot be beaten.
Some walks/tasks on offer, including pine pulling on Canford Heath, (BoP 265265 on 13th 24th Feb).
RSPB (Arne) 11th Feb, and Durlston have a few events, and the next Bird Boats are round the harbour on 18th Feb and 4th March (01929 462383 for details).Useful Numbers of organisations running tasks or walks:-
