Environmental News April 2007

At times it almost feels like Spring, then along comes the cold wind and we are wrapping up once more.

On the warmer days there are birds and butterflies to see and hear. Among the migrant birds, we have, as usual, Chiff chaffs to the fore, and I have heard black caps and a redstart. In our garden at the moment the sound world is dominated by a nuthatch, who seems to have a permanent tape of his peep, peep, peep.

Flowers are still coming along, some very early others about on time, and the sticky buds on conker trees are breaking out. They always seem to me to be the first real leaves to show.

Saw three adders on the golf course last week. They were sensibly out of the line of fire, but not line of sight. Two looked well entwined, but I do not know enough about snakes to say if they were mating.

Plenty of male brimstones around when it is sunny. but as usual not many ladies. I hope the high number is a result of the good butterfly year last Summer, and we can expect other species to follow that lead. Most species had a good or even a bumper year. but one species the small tortoiseshell had almost disappeared, not only in Dorset but generally across the South.

Once again the Dorset Coast and Countryside magazine is late, but Borough of Poole are doing some activities :

Butterfly Conservation are joining with the Dorset Moth group, for 3 evening meets, all in North Dorset.(01747 854099), and Poole RSPB are visiting Garston Wood on 29th April ( 01929 552431)
