Environmental News April 2008
Wet and windy once again. Despite global warming, it seems to be always cold, and I have yet to be shedding my winter woollies.
Looking at last years notes, we again have the nuthatch with his eternal peep, peep, peep. At present he seems to be competing with the spotted woodpecker for a Des. Res. in our old chestnut tree. Have seen a goldfinch in our garden recently, but we have lots of trees so I do not expect him to stay. Not had a visiting chiff-chaff yet, but there seem plenty out on the golf course.
Had a look round the Broadstone LNR for spring flowers. Not very exciting, with only tiny pockets of flower, and those not really looking very healthy. I know the conservation group made an attempt to plant flower plugs a few years ago, but they have mostly vanished.
Just not been warm enough for reptiles or most butterflies. The latter had a very poor year last year, and we wait to see if they can recover a bit his year. In particular, a previously common species, the small tortoiseshell was only seen a couple of times in the whole of Dorset and most of Southern England. One day the sun must shine!
Dorset Coast and Countryside magazine has come on time, with 40 activities in April. Borough of Poole are also active with a kid’s lesson on birds, Upton Country park, 54th at 10.30 am), a walk on Canford Heath –afternoon April 13th (2.00 pm, Gravel Hill), reptile search,15th (Bourne Valley 3.00 PM) And a bird walk in Delph Woods on 30th, at 10.00 AM.
