Environmental News November 2009
Another friendly month behind us.
The number of insects slowly diminished, but there wer still a few butterflies at the start of the month.
Speckled Woods and Red Admirals were the last survivors in my garden.
Lots of birds around, some coming and some going. One or two ‘specials’ for twitchers, such as the Rudde’s warbler at Abbotsbury. Only speciality in this area was the reappearance of the bittern on Hatchpond.
Lots of spoonbills in the Brownsea Lagoon
Having had the recent rains, the fungi are coming to life. It always surprises me at the unusual places they can spring from. Unfortunately, because the fungi are late, the seasonal walks are over.
Very few outdoor events this month, but nothing locally. Birds at Durlston (8th) looks the pick, with Arne (21st, RSPB, 01929 553360) also good for birders.
Most of the areas run practical conservation groups, and details of these and further interesting walks should be available at the numbers below. Broadstone Library has copies of Coast and Countryside, where you can get your own free copy, and find information about lots of events throughout Dorset.
