Environmental News December 2009
After an exceedingly wet November, there is not much to say.
Birds are still around, but everything else is submerged.
There have been sightings of many different species all along the Dorset coast, and a visit to the website ofthe Dorset Bird Club will show the range of birds to spot. Alas it only tells you where they were, not where they are today.
One very significant event has been a large number of Leachs petrels – around 2000 – all along the dorset coast.
No butterflies, very few insects and lots of rotting fungi. Roll on the new year.
Very few outdoor events this month, but only one locally. Birds at Durlston (13th) and Shell Bay (12th) run by dorset bird Club (01202 849089) look the pick. There is also a bird boat, stopping on Brownsea on 6th (01929 462383). BoP have a guided walk on Canford heath also on 6th, starting from the gravel hill lay-by at 1400 hrs
If weather permits, most of the areas run practical conservation groups, and details of these and further interesting walks should be available at the numbers below. Broadstone Library has copies of Coast and Countryside, where you can get your own free copy, and find information about lots of events throughout Dorset.
