New Legislation for SSSIs is included in the Wildlife Bill to be introduced in the next Parliamentary session. It allows for monitoring and enforced restoration of sites, together with tougher penalties on site owners for neglect . Dorset has 143 SSSIs, out of a countrywide total in excess of 4000. Friends of Broadstone Nature Reserve Their Annual Meeting on 18th Jan at 7.30 pm in the Library. No further conservation tasks until 6th Feb. Poole Countryside Wardens Poole Countryside Wardens are leading a walk on Canford Heath on Dec 12th. Meet at the Gravel Hill lay-by 2.00 pm. RSPB Next RSPB meeting is their Xmas Party on Thurs 9th, 7.30 pm at Upton Community Centre. Poole Harbour bird-boat trips are scheduled for Mon 27th Dec and 9th Jan 11.00 am. Butterfly Conservation Butterfly Conservation carry out regular weekly surveys of suitable habitat walks throughout the summer, including two walks on Upton Heath. If you are interested the year 2000 meeting for 'Walkers' in East Dorset will be held on 4th Mar, 7.30pm, at St Catherines church hall, Wimborne.
