| Broadstone Residents' Association Meeting - October 2003 | |
Lots of things happening. Of great local interest is the opening of the new Methodist centre, which is due on December 13th. Of wider interest is the Council Budget and the level of Council Tax. This currently looks as if it will be 7 or 8 %, but the Residents Associations will have a chance to suggest areas where money can be saved or diverted. Councillor Leverett will be attending all the Local area Committee meetings to explain current and four year plans. BRA further discussed the traffic priorities at the Springdale Avenue/ Lancaster drive intersection. It would seem that the priorities are deliberately set the 'wrong' way, to slow traffic coming down Lancaster Drive, and it is unlikely that the Poole Traffic action Group will approve any changes. There are new draft 'Plans' for Waste Strategy and Beach Retention. The former suggests that the current vehicle site in Hatchpond Road could become a Pyrolosis Plant, disposing of much of East Dorset's waste. This was opposed on grounds of extra heavy traffic congestion, and the possibility of gas/chemical pollution if the plant failed. The beach retention plan required 27 one hundred and fifty metre rock groynes (as at the Haven Hotel) between Sandbanks and Hengistbury Head. BRA felt they were ugly and destroyed the character or the long beach line. (This scheme was later adopted by the Poole Council). The Christmas Parade was to be on 6th of December, and lights would be erected around the village as usual. The Dorset Federation had been concerned with the various waste strategies, but felt the Plans were in general acceptable. There was an opportunity for members of BRA to visit the local waste recycling site (White's Tip) on Canford Heath, and this was to be planned for Spring 2004. There were questions raised at the end of the meeting about the future re-cycling proposals. It would seem that whilst Poole would wish to provide kerbside collections of glass, paper, ....etc. the cost of extra wheelie bins or boxes was too much for the budget to stand, and the Council were seeking government support to purchase these items. One of the members asked whether we could have a 'letters' column in the Magazine, but it was obvious that the longish turn round time from draft to finished proof, made such an idea impractical.
