Broadstone Residents' Association Meeting - January 2004

The Winter Magazine was distributed, and had as a main theme 'What Makes Broadstone Tick'. There was a related competition, showing a number of clock-faces round the village asking 'Where are these?'.

A member of the Committee had raised a petition about speeding in Springdale Road. This was passed to the Traffic Action Group, asking for a speed camera to be installed. This seemed unlikely, but a manual camera could be operated on the site for a period.

Council Tax increases seemed to be coming down as government grants had been improved, and the Council were still finding savings. Attempts to find further details on the Police precept were making little progress, and this subject was to be raised with Councillors on the Police Authority Committee.

Poole Partnership had received a grant, enabling them to set up a website (called the Poole Portal), and BRA had been asked to pass comment on the structure of the website, and asked whether they would wish to contribute material. BRA felt they would be best served by having a link to this website.

There had been a number of planning applications that were over development for their site, but much comment was passed on the appearance of the metal roof of the Harry Palmer office block in the village centre. Later discussions led to the final appearance being conventional tiles, and nothing to cause concern.

BRA and the Dorset Federation were pleased that Poole Council were to charge 90% Council Tax on second homes and unoccupied properties.

The AGM was discussed and it was felt that the Poole Bridge and the Regeneration of the West Quay area would be a good topic, and after some correspondence, Bernie Topham, the policy director for this subject agreed to speak at our AGM on May 20th.

There was further discussion about trying to match our Exec. Committee meetings with the LAC meetings, and the general feeling was that we should follow our own six/seven weekly cycle, and if necessary call extra meetings if there was anything important on the LAC agenda.

The meeting closed with a discussion about improving access to Broadstone centre for disabled. Whilst pavements in the centre were generally acceptable, approaches to the village were of poor quality and effects like overhanging hedges and large potholes made journeys difficult for wheelchair access.
