Residents Association Meeting, 5th October 2006

Summary of the Executive Committee meeting held on Thursday 5th October, 2006, in Broadstone Library.

General discussion on the minutes for 11th August covered the telephone Mast at Pine Springs (Refused and a new Application for a site at The Clump), The New History of Broadstone, which had now reached the CD stage, the Clock which was working well in the President's garage, but installation had still to be arranged. There was to be a forthcoming visit to BoPs fledgling call centre.

John Noyes raised Footpath 5 again, but there seemed to be no money for it, and the Council were considering compulsory purchase powers to achieve an easier route.

Rosemary Mitchell was introduced, to become Publicity Officer for both the Residents and the Chamber of Trade.

The Treasurer was happy to announce that we had received over £4000 in subscriptions, slightly better than last year, and this would give us sufficient to underwrite the first printing of 'The New History...' and printing the Winter Magazine. Currently there was £8239 in the bank.

There had been fewer planning applications recently and mostly of a simple nature. However there had been refusals for larger developments at 54 and 218 Lower Blandford Rd, and 31 Dunyeats. The application for 34 Charborough Rd had been modified from a complete rebuild, into a plan for conversion into 4 flats, and was likely to be approved.

JM was a bit worried that some contributors to the Winter edition had yet to provide, but he felt he could get the publication ready for distribution on 11th Jan 2007.

There was also discussion about paying wardens to deliver the Magazines, but the meeting was not in favour.

DR said that over the year local schools had performed exceptionally well, and we should formally congratulate all our local teachers. He cited Corfe Hills where 170 students went on to university.

Bob Williams presented a paper outlining the results of the group's meeting on the Future of Broadstone. The general feeling was that currently Broadstone had a reasonable mix of goods and services, including some facilities like banks and medical centres, that were essentials for a thriving community. However the 'village' was under threat with increasing competition from car-friendly shopping centres. This was partly due to limited parking and dwindling public transport. Occasionally poor service contributed to loss of custom.

There were several actions that could come from the report, but the most significant conclusion was that BRA should try to act as a catalyst and promote interaction between the many smaller clubs and societies that existed in the village.

This could be done by inviting one or more groups to attend a BRA meeting, and address the Committee. It might also be possible to arrange a meeting, say, once a year, of leaders from many of the active groups, so that they could feel part of the well-being of Broadstone. This was an activity where our new Publicity Officer could be involved.

The next meeting is an Executive Committee Meeting on Thurs. 23rd November 2006.
