Residents Association Meeting, 2nd August 2007
A summary of the Executive Committee meeting held on Thursday 2nd August 2007 at the Broadstone Library.
There was a brief discussion as to whether the current agenda was ‘working’. Most members felt that the previous more detailed format was preferable.
The Publicity Officer had not recently appeared at Committee Meetings. Sec stated that she had formally apologised every time, and had undergone an exceedingly difficult time recently.
The Treasurer reported that to date, this years income from subscriptions (£914) advertising (£125) interest (£92) and surplus on the sale of New History of Broadstone (£492) totals £1677.
Expenditure to date, including expenses and donations totals £1253, leaving a surplus of £424.
Roger Jefferies also raised the subject of the Station Hotel, which seemed to have gone quiet. It appeared that the developer had submitted revised plans, but since then the planning officer involved had left and the current status was not clear. It looked as if the site lay within the revised conservation area, which could add further complication, and probably involved a meeting with Margot Teesdale. Cllrs Martin and Mason said they would talk to Planning to find out the current situation.
LONG SERVICE AWARDS. The Association had no system in place to record who had worked for the organisation, or for how long. In many cases the reason for ‘retiring’ was extreme old age. In one or two cases we had had road wardens who had worked for us for 30 years or more, and the committee had thought fit to make some kind of presentation to mark our appreciation.
We would try to set up a register of wardens, so that we could treat long service on a factual basis. Frank Wood had some old warden lists from his time as Chief Warden, and would turn up the best available, and other officers were asked to look through any old magazine issues to see if any further names could be added to the lists.
The treasurer to produced a budget to giving some idea of the amount that would be appropriate to give in awards to Broadstone organisations. Overall, by the end of the year, he calculated that we would have total funds of over £9000.
Taking out costs for the Winter Magazine, and leaving a fund for Possible legal wrangles, he felt that we could allocate half the remainder to providing grants. – a sum nearly £2000
The favoured approach was that we should put a clear statement in the Winter Magazine, as to who would be eligible and how to make requests. Probably we would need a sub-committee to deal with the allocation.
NB we still have a commitment to Footpath 5 of £1000
NEW HISTORY OF BROADSTONE
We had nearly sold the 1000 copies that we had printed and the question raised was should we get more printed? The authors had suggested that we do not print further copies, but wait for three years and produce an Issue 2, with additions and corrections.
Roy Godfrey had spoken to the Southern Poole Chairmen’s Association, who were very active in opposing the quantity of flats being built and the resultant high density.
