Residents Association Annual General Meeting 2007

Our MP Annette Brooke attended the AGM, together with Councillor Mike Brooke, and our new Councillor Daniel Martin. The attendance of 80 members was the best we have had for several years. Thank you all.

The meeting opened with a talk given by Mr David Howell about the development of the RNLI and the types of craft they used.

This was followed by the formal section of the meeting, whereby John Noyes was re-elected (for the last time) as Chairman, John Milhofer resigned as Editor and Advertising Manager (having filled the posts for the last ten years) the remaining officers were re-elected en bloc, and we had Barry Smith elected as the new Editor. This leaves us still without and advertising manager.

The Chairman’s report covered the main events of the past year, with the collapse of footpath 5 again being a low point. The publication of The New History of Broadstone had been a great success. It had started as a Millennium project, but somehow got delayed. We were still uncertain whether the Recreation Ground was to be used for entertainment and music, but so far it appeared that there would be no nuisance. As far as planning development was concerned, it looked as if we had no power in stemming the advancing flood of flats. This densification of property and people brought problems of parking and traffic, without any extra resources for services such as transport, health, etc.

The treasurers report made good reading, with a fair surplus that we would look to use to support Broadstone clubs, and he told us that the books were still selling well.

Planning echoed John Noyes’ comments on densification, and the Editor in his final report told us how much he had enjoyed the post. He also promised help to the new officer.

Education had had a successful year with good reports and results all round, but the decision by Poole to opt for an age transfer at 11, gave Broadstone, and in particular Corfe Hills school a problem in that it appeared that East Dorset were to retain the age 13 transfer.

The Chief Warden said that there were permanent problems in getting enough Wardens to distribute the 3300 magazines twice a year, and that his army was now getting very old. Oh for a flatter Broadstone!

The meeting closed with the traditional wine and cheese refreshments, and an awful lot of chat.
