Through goods train at Broadstone
Through goods train at Broadstone
A through goods train at Broadstone, coming off the line from Wimborne and going onto the line to Hamworthy Junction. The picture is taken from the staff-only foot crossing at the north end of the island platform (2 and 3). The headcode disc is for Southampton Terminus to Weymouth via Wimborne, so it may be a Millbrook to Hamworthy train. Difficult to date. Can't be before 1948 because the engine has a B.R. smokebox numberplate (unreadable), and it must be before 1959, because the line on which the photographer is standing had been re-laid with flat-bottom rail by then. The engine is a Southern Railway Q1 0-6-0 (the most powerful British 0-6-0s ever built). [Information - John Saville]
A "Q1" passes Broadstone signalbox in the 1950's with a freight train from Southampton to Weymouth. Photo. John Sansom. [information - Graham Kelsey]
