FROM THE VICAR: Out of a love for our Lord and a concern for each other, the generosity of some of our parishioners is at times, quite overwhelming.
On Wednesday, 29th April, at the Service where he was regularly a Server, we dedicated several items for use in the Church in memory of John Knowles – two altar cloths; small items of communion linen; four albs to be worn by our servers; three pulpit falls in fabrics matching the existing altar-frontals, to mark the changes of the seasons in the Church’s Liturgical Year; a small solid silver ciborium to contain communion wafers – the previous one in silver-plate has peeled badly; a small monstrance for blessing with the Sacrament at Corpus Christi and other occasions; a lead-glass flagon; a tray with stainless steel cruets for containing water and wine at midweek services.
There are four sets of vestments (chasubles and matching stoles) for the celebrant at the altar – some of the ones in current use are my personal property, whilst others from the church and Hillbourne have become faded and worn. There is, on order, a vestment press and drawer unit to contain most of the above.
John, being an engineer, was unhappy with the little sanctus-bells which occasionally fell apart when they were rung. There is now a fine set of bronze bells, whose tone would surely have delighted him.
All this has come from an extremely generous legacy from John’s estate and we will be using some of the remainder to put new lighting into the Church, clean the underside of the roof and give the interior a much-needed coat of paint.
I am most grateful, that when I come to retire (in just over two and a half years), the building, its decoration and ornaments will be in good order and that the work and worship will continue in this wonderful parish that has been greatly blessed by God over many years.
Martin Fredriksen.
