FROM THE VICAR: There has been talk recently of the ‘discovery’ of an innate religious tendency within mankind. Personally, I am surprised that this has ever been doubted, since if we have been created by God and are made in his image, then something of himself must surely be within us.

An expert has a ‘feel’ for a painting, a piece of pottery or furniture, or a piece of sculpture as to whether it is a genuine example of a particular artist’s work. A Stradivarius violin has been copied in the minutest detail, but does not sound the same as the real thing. First of course, it is not the same age as the original and has not had a chance to mellow in the same way, but the main conclusion was that although it was technically accurate, it lacked the input of the master craftsman himself.

There is so much that we are unable to create for ourselves. A glance at the world around us, particularly in this very beautiful area in which we are privileged to live, shows something of the greatness of the Creator.

The Psalmist put it in these words:

The heavens proclaim the glory of God and the firmament shows forth the work of his hands.

This means that all of us are something special in God’s eyes and as part of his Creation we should respect that aspect of the Divine in each other. The world is God’s gift to us all for our enjoyment and should be shared by all and not vandalised.

Somehow, we don’t seem to have grasped this point yet!
