FROM THE VICAR : No sooner do we close the Christmas and Epiphany season and Lent comes upon us this year very quickly. Ash Wednesday is on February 17th and we will mark the beginning of this holy Season with the celebration of the Eucharist with the Blessing and Imposition of Ashes in St.John’s at 10.30am and again at 8pm. This will be our opportunity to dedicate our personal resolutions to God, for his blessing.
Lent comes from an old English word ‘lencten’ meaning ‘Spring’ – a time when everything in the natural world comes into new life and freshness. For us in the Church it is a time to begin again. With the frenetic activity of the world in which we are involved, there is no break – so perhaps Lent could be a time when we do less, rather than take on a lot more? Perhaps take time to reflect, to give some things up or to do one of those things that we always intended to do but never quite got round to it - or to turn towards those who are in need by donating to a charity or giving practical help?
For those who like to learn from other people’s experiences, on behalf of Churches Together in Broadstone, the Methodist Church are putting on a Lent Course (‘Spot the Difference’) on Thursday evenings from 25th February – 25th March inclusive from 7.30-9.00pm – at which we are all welcome. Whatever we do – or don’t do – during this coming Lent, may it be a time of growth and refreshment so that we may be able to celebrate Holy Week and Easter with hearts and minds refreshed.
